Today, we celebrate Haitian Flag Day — a symbol of resilience, pride, and unity.
On May 18, 1803, under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Catherine Flon, the Haitian flag was born—stitched together from the French tricolor, with the white band removed to represent the rejection of colonialism and the unity of Black and mixed-race Haitians. This powerful act marked the beginning of Haiti’s journey to becoming the first free Black republic in the world.
To my fellow Haitians and Haitian descendants — never forget the strength, beauty, and brilliance in your roots. You are walking proof of a history that changed the world…
L’union fait la force.
Unity makes strength.
Happy Haitian Flag Day!
